Messaging That Sparks Action: How to Make Your Words Work for You
SP01010
If your brand’s messaging isn’t making people stop, feel something, and do something, then we need to talk. Because let’s be real—bland, forgettable messaging is like shouting into the void and hoping someone cares. Spoiler alert: they don’t.
In this blog post, inspired by Episode 10 of The Sizzle Podcast, we’re diving deep into what makes brand messaging work—like, work so well that people can’t help but take action.
Why Your Message Matters More Than You Think
A great message doesn’t just describe what you do—it sells it in a way that makes people go, “Yes! I need that in my life!”
Take Nike’s “Just Do It.” It’s not about shoes. It’s about motivation, drive, and the idea that you’re one pair of sneakers away from being an elite athlete (even if your marathon is just getting off the couch).
If your message isn’t moving people emotionally, inspiring action, or making them feel something, then it’s just taking up space.
How to Craft Messaging That Actually Works
Start with the Problem
People don’t care about your product. They care about how it fixes their problem.
Example: Instead of “We sell ergonomic chairs,” say, “Your back pain is ruining your productivity—our chairs fix that. And they look damn good doing it.”
Make It About Them, Not You
Your audience is the star, not your brand.
Example: Instead of “We’ve been in business for 20 years,” say, “For 20 years, we’ve helped people just like you build pain-free, productive workspaces.”
Keep It Stupidly Simple
If people have to think too hard, you’ve already lost them. Clarity beats cleverness every time.
Example: “Uber—Get a ride anywhere, anytime.” Not, “We’re a leading provider of innovative transportation solutions.”
Tap Into Emotion
People make decisions emotionally, then justify them with logic. Your message should make them feel something.
Example: “Because you’re worth it” (L’Oréal). It’s not about makeup—it’s about self-worth and confidence.
Call Them to Action—Now!
If you don’t tell people what to do next, they won’t do anything. Make your CTA crystal clear.
Example: “Sign up today and get 50% off your first order.” Not, “Learn more about our great deals.” (Yawn.)
Brands That Nail Their Messaging
🔥 Apple – “Think Different.” It’s not about computers—it’s about identity. 🔥 Dollar Shave Club – “Shave Time. Shave Money.” It’s punchy, fun, and crystal clear. 🔥 M&Ms – “Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands.” It tells you exactly what makes M&Ms better. 🔥 Slack – “Be Less Busy.” Who doesn’t want that?
The best brands don’t just tell you what they sell—they make you feel why you need it.
Your Sizzle Challenge
This week, take a hard look at your messaging. Ask yourself:
Does it make people feel something?
Is it clear, simple, and action-driven?
Does it focus more on your audience than on you?
Pick one area where you can strengthen your brand message—whether it’s your website copy, social media bio, or email subject lines. Make it bolder, clearer, and more compelling. Then watch what happens.
