Accounts are friction dressed as safety

Schools ask for accounts because tools default to accounts. Parents abandon because they are standing in the grocery line trying to remember whether they used Google or email last time.

Design rules that work

  1. Open the sheet on mobile first. If the claim button is below a wall of instructions, rewrite.
  2. Ask only for what you will use: name, slot, maybe a phone for day-of. Not a biography.
  3. Send a confirmation immediately. Silence creates duplicate sign-ups.
  4. Show remaining slots clearly. Ambiguity creates double-booking folklore.

When you do need identity

Background-checked chaperones and licensed drivers are different from juice-box volunteers. Separate the credential workflow from the casual signup sheet — do not make every parent complete a clearance form to bring napkins.
